The Turtle Conservation and Education Centre (TCEC) is an impressive centre, and the employees are very passionate what they do and know what they are doing, they are all volunteers (often students).
On arrival you get a guide who walks with you and explains things, our guide was a marine biology student from Surabaya and she was able to explain everything in perfect English.
There are several turtle centres in Serangan, like Turtle island, but they are not worth the visit (if you look on Tripadvisor you will understand why), so make sure you visit the correct one, click here for the exact location.

There are various activities, the employees of the centre searching the nearby beaches for laid eggs, often they are also warned by the people, the employees of the centre then take the eggs and bury the eggs in the sand which are located in the centre. When the turtles hatch from the egg, they can swim in the basin with water for a few days until they are big enough to be released. If you are lucky, you can do this together with the employees.

Furthermore, there are many turtles get hurt or got stuck in a fishing net and they take also care of these turtles until they are strong enough again to go back into the ocean, some will never be able to go back into the sea and will spend the rest of their live in a shelter.

As you can see on the picture above the turtle is missing one of his legs and the turtle on the picture below has a very damaged shield.

It costs a lot of money to keep this centre running, which is why a donation is requested from the visitors. And it’s not just the buildings, the water and food for the turtles, but also the cars (vans) to pick up the turtles when a report comes in that a turtle has been found.

More information about the turtles, the centre and other information can be found on the extensive website with a lot of background information. You can also follow them on Facebook.

The Turtle Conservation and Education Centre (TCEC) has made a great impression, at TCEC you are not allowed to touch the turtles and you can also not lift them up for the perfect picture.
Unfortunately on Serangan there are a lot of places where you are allowed to do this and where you will find the turtles in a very bad condition. At TCEC they really care about the turtles so make sure you visit the correct place.
Also Serangan can easily be reached by car and you don’t have to take a boat there.
