In west Bali, in the Jembrana region, traditional buffalo races are regularly held, these races are also known as the “makepung” races and the races date back more than 100 years ago. The buffalo jockeys take these races very seriously, during the event the buffalo are “dressed up” with decorations and bells, the jockeys pray for victory, it is a scene somewhat reminiscent of ancient Greece.

The buffalo racing tradition is the result of months of painstaking work by the farmers as they all prepare to race and earn the honour of first place. The race originally started among farmers in their spare time during the harvest season and the thanksgiving ritual after a successful harvest. The buffalo, chosen for their strength and appearance, are decorated with silk banners and wooden bells and have painted horns.

During the months of June to October, buffalo races are held throughout the region Jembrana at different locations. During the season you can find the places and times on the internet, search for Makepung races with Google and you will get several results.
There are 2 types of races:
– a race through a rice field, where 2 buffaloes pull a plow steered by a jockey;
– a 2 km race on a slightly paved road with 2 buffaloes, a cart and a jockey.
Tip: if you attend a race through a rice field it is advisable to walk to the edge of the swampy rice field barefoot or wear slippers.
Before the race starts, the buffalo are first paraded in front of the public. Then 4 couples compete against each other at the same time and the winner then continues to the next round until ultimately 1 is the champion.

There is no betting in these races, they compete for honour!
